Asian Elephant Research
and Conservation Center (AERCC)
Asian Elephant Research and
Conservation Centre (AERCC), was set up in early 1998 to deal exclusively with matters
pertaining to the Asian Elephant, viewed as the flagship species in the context of
conservation of biologically rich tropical forests of this region. AERCC undertakes
applied research and direct field conservation activities pertaining to the Asian elephant
and its habitat. The centre has created a comprehensive database on Asian elephant
populations, and is actively involved in field research projects and on the ground
conservation initiatives, organizing scientific workshops, and promoting projects
beneficial to elephant conservation. The centre is a major capacity building centre in
Asia with focus on providing training in recent techniques for censusing elephants and
other large mammals, monitoring and research on elephant-human conflict, evaluation and
institution of mitigation techniques and the use of GIS (Geographical Information System)
for evaluating elephant habitats.
